The French have a pretty efficient system for catching speeders on their highways. They are toll roads, so on entry you get a ticket like in a parking garage. When you exit, you pay for the miles travelled. If arrive there a little too early, well they charge you extra.

That's very smart, seems very efficient.

But that’s less fun than chasing speeders in race cars.

It used to be a pretty good place for speeding. Not as good as it's neighbors, but still pretty good. Sadly from what I hear, that is no longer as true. But I suspect it is still better than in the US.

Surely speeding in Britain is not a thing. I hear their highways are always jammed.

Actually, it’s a great idea. You get to see a racecar!

So what if you speed like crazy and take a smoke break (as the French would do) or drop you speed super low?

Hum. Where did you hear that? Our toll roads are freaking expensive (but they are some of the best), but there is no such thing as a fee for driving too fast (we have automatic and mean-speed speed traps for that). Though the tolls can be useful when trying to aprehend speeders.

Only if you’re a foreigner, driving a foreign car (from a country that has no agreement with France), and as long as you don’t get stopped by the cops. That’s the only way you can get out with speeding in front of all our speed traps (automatic on the side, mean-speed over several km, moving behind a car licence plate, automatic and multi-lane, as well as multi direction, ...)

I find the style of door hinge on that car interesting. Any particular reason why the door folds down rather than opens like a regular door? Is it easier to get in/out in a hurry?

Probably. And they look cooler. When you build a race car, you can slip in some details like that, knowing that you don’t have to worry about things like real life practicability, costs or governmental rules and regulations.

I keep wondering what a four door car would look like with doors like that. In a sense, they are somewhat practical - they make sort of an umbrella in the rain. Also, depending where the pivot point is, you can have quite a long door without it having to take up a ton of room adjacent to the car when opening up. I’m a fan.

I got told so on a vacation a couple years ago, but maybe I misunderstood. So do they use the tollbooths to collect speeding fines? Which would be almost the same just a little less big-brother.

No they don’t. But when the police runs some operations on the motorway, they usually just wait at the tollbooth. Much easier to stop people.

The motorway are operated by private companies here (because of a stupid government decision 10 years ago), mainly two: Vinci (which is one of the biggest, if not THE largest construction company in the world, and owns a bunch of airports, buildings, ...) for one and a joint-venture of Eiffage (Vinci direct competition in the cosntruction business) and an Australian company.
